When it comes to measuring your drapes, it’s important to ensure you have the proper amount of fabric before you begin your project. In this guide we will provide general measurements for drapes (often referred to as panels and curtains). Here is a quick reference guide to measuring for the correct amount of fabric.
When measuring the desired length of fabric you will first need to know where you will be placing the curtain rod. Generally the rod is mounted about 4-6 in above the window frame. However, for lower ceilings or designs to make the window appear larger, the rod should be closer to the ceiling, about 3-5 in below.
Another important factor to consider is the fullness of the drapery. On average, drapes should be about 2.5 x’s the width of the window. Thick fabrics like chenille and velvets fill space much more than lightweight materials, like sheers and cotton. For extra fullness, you may opt-in for double width panels.
How to Measure Standard Width Panels:
Measure the finished length of curtains (curtain rod to the floor) + 16 inches divided by 36 = yardage required. Double this number to include yardage for both panels.
*For large prints add an extra yard (or one vertical repeat of the fabric) per pair, to match up pattern
*For double width panels, multiply the above number by two.
Example: 80” STANDARD WIDTH PANELS
80+16=96
96/36 = 3
3 x 2 = 6 yards of fabric
DOUBLE WIDTH PANELS
6 x 2 = 12 yards of fabric

Measure the length and width from seam-to-seam of the sofa/chair for all areas of the furniture. Back side + Front Side + Side Panels +Arms outside +Arms inside +Seating area (w/ cushions removed) + Cushions (including sides) = Total inches of yardage needed (divide by) 36
*It is good practice to add about 10% of fabric for error margin
*If upholstering with plaid or striped fabrics add 20% to ensure matching

To measure for the standard bedspread:
Measure the width of the mattress + Drop (top of mattress to floor) for right and left side Length of mattress + Drop (top of mattress to floor) + pillow tuck (15-20”) divided by 36 = Total yardage needed for bedspread
